ANYWHERE BUT HERE!
Dance films by Dance North Youth Company

Dance North Youth Company were due to make their debut performance at the cancelled RISE 2020 Festival of Contemporary Dance and Performance in May.

The piece, entitled ANYWHERE BUT HERE! explores the question “what does it mean to belong?” Since April in our online sessions we have been investigating how these thoughts and feelings have shifted through the lens of lock down.

To keep ANYWHERE BUT HERE! alive as an idea and as a piece, each week dancers have been exploring choreographic tasks and themes that we were working on in the live version of the piece.

Taking a sentence that the dancers developed previously, the dancers have created 6 short digital works that build to form the sentence. Each week the dancers have been given parameters on what shots to take, how to frame the movement they’ve created and how to work creatively with different locations.

Filmed either by the dancers themselves or with family members, these six short works have been shot entirely on mobile phones.

I Escape Darkness To Get To Me forms the complete sentence, with one just one installment yet to come…
